Celebrating Impressionism – an exhibition.

In 1874 there was an exhibition in which the Claude Monet painting named “Impression, Sunrise” made a critic call the event ‘The Exhibition of the Impressionists.’ This moment is seen as the beginning of Impressionism in art history. What better way to celebrate such an event than with a dedicated exhibition in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam?

To mark this special anniversary, the Van Gogh Museum will host the exhibition “Vive l’impressionnisme! Masterpieces from Dutch Collections” from October 11, 2024, to January 26, 2025. Does this sound like something you would like to enjoy? If you visit this temporary exhibition you can see works created by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Berthe Morisot, Alfred Sisley and Paul Cézanne.

What is impressionism about?

Impressionism came with lots of changes to the art created in this period. First of all, it was recognized by light and color, it portrayed everyday scenes (instead of historical and mythological themes), it was often painted outside, with blurred lines, and it focused on special events as it tried to capture moments.

Overall, Impressionism was all about capturing the feeling of a moment with light, color, and a touch of spontaneity.
